Mud therapy: What is it and what are the benefits of this treatment?

Have you heard of mud therapy? Pleasant, relaxing and with a noticeable effect on our bodies, it is one of the traditional treatments offered at spas

In fact, mud therapy, i.e. the therapeutic use of mud and heat, has a long history: in Ancient Egypt, both elements were already being used to relieve muscle and joint discomfort.

If you suffer from joint or muscle pain, you may be interested in learning more about it. In this post, we explain what parafango is, what it is used for, and what the main benefits of this treatment are

What is a mud bath?

Let’s start with the most important question: what exactly is a mud pack? It is a localised thermotherapy technique, i.e. heat applied to a specific area of the body.

Its name gives you a clue: “parafango” comes from the combination of “paraffin” and “mud”. This treatment is carried out by mixing clay or mud with paraffin, which creates a mouldable, warm film called a poultice, which is applied directly to the joint or area to be treated.

At Balneario de Fitero, we perform parafango treatments on large areas of the body such as the lower back and trapezius muscles. The temperature of the plate is usually around 46 ºC and each session lasts about 15 minutes.

What is parafango used for?

If you are wondering what a mud bath is for, the answer is simple: to relieve discomfort when you suffer from muscle stiffness, strain or joint pain and your body needs extra care.

How does it work? The mud pack combines two things that work very well together: sustained localised heat and temperature retention. The heat promotes muscle relaxation in the fasciae and increases vasodilation.

The result is a feeling of pain relief. Parafango treatment acts directly on the area where you need it most: lower back, neck, knees, shoulders, hands…

Important: it is not advisable to apply this treatment to areas with varicose veins, acute inflammation or very sensitive skin.

  • Back strain and muscle spasms (lumbar or cervical).
  • Joint discomfort in the knees, shoulders, or hands, especially if accompanied by stiffness. If this is the case for you, take note of these tips for bone and joint pain.
  • Chronic pain and mobility difficulties. For example, if you suffer from fibromyalgia.

However, mud therapy can be a great help in relieving muscle and joint pain as part of a comprehensive approach, as we usually use it in the therapeutic programmes at Balneario de Fitero.

Benefits of mud therapy

The benefits of mud therapy are wide-ranging:

  • Localised muscle relaxation. The heat helps the area to gradually relax and the muscle to stop being on guard.
  • Pain relief. Especially when the discomfort is related to stiffness, muscle spasms or overexertion.
  • Greater mobility and less muscle stiffness. It’s not magic: moving is usually easier when your muscles are warmer and more relaxed.
  • General wellbeing. When tension is relieved in a key area, such as the neck or lower back, the whole body feels the benefits.

In addition, parafango treatment has a very important benefit: it forces you to stop for a few minutes. And when you live with pain, that rest is very necessary. Your body really appreciates it!
